If you identify as a lesbian who has gone through a transition from male to female, please share what you experience in dealing with 'the lesbian community'. In general, do you find people to be supportive and accepting of you, or do you have to deal with a lot of negativity?

`It is a mixed reaction I find from the Lesbian community. Much Like Heterosexuals when it comes the issue of Homosexuality... Many Lesbians publicly support trans-gender/trans-sexual people and communities; Yet often times behind the scenes is a totally different story. There is a complete disdain for anything male most times within the lesbian culture, even though someone who is TS is not a male..It is sadly often viewed that way... I have a therapist that gets looked down on and shunned because she works with trans-sexual people... Not by Straight people.... By her Lesbian "friends". I have spent time within almost every culture of the LGBT spectrum at some point... I have seen more than enough to know what people really think. Do you think it is any different when a Female to Male Identifies as gay? Do you think the gay boys just let him waltz right into their little circle? No, not so easy... I know FTM's that do identify as gay also and have talked with them in depth. But as far as transwomen in the lesbian community.... I've definitely seen an heard enough to know what is said behind closed doors. And it is disgusting... If you can honestly say because I was born in a male body I cannot be a woman or a female... You are in violation of everything being a lesbian and a feminist truly is. If I am not a woman, then neither would be the following according to your thinking: A woman who has had reproductive organs removed, a woman who's eggs are infertile, a woman who has had breast cancer and had a mastectomy, A woman who body produces to little natural estrogen... I could keep going. Point is when you say someone like me is not a woman... You are feeding the chauvinistic ideals of what a woman should be. And that is why the lesbian culture keeps its disdain for TG/TS girls a secret. Sure some will put it right out there and say it in the open... All that makes you is a loud mouth chauvinist and bigot. So to the lesbians who support women like me and TRULY MEAN it... Thank you

`Im supportive to TS people. Oh Ginger if lesbians think the way you discribed well then it also really displays an ignorance of biology, the effects of hormones on the developing brain and not to mention those born intersexed or with ambiguous genitalia. Hell, it ignores the brain completely and, like most men, divides the sexes into those who have a ----- and those poor souls who do not. Thats a man thinking like a man, I'll have no part of it. Transsexual women are like any other women on this planet. And if you think that they are a woman with something "extra" then you so wrong... transsexual women are not male in any shape or form.

`Omg Ginger that was an amazing post! I run a feminist group in my town, would you mind if I read that to them? I think it was said absolutely perfect! Ive been trying to find something that better explains things to the group, especially since my ex-girlfriend is now transitioning FTM and Ive been trying to make other realise how WHAT they say is very important. Like some people THINK they're being supportive, ex: "I love you no matter what friend, i don't care what you're doing to your body, you'll always be the same ol' girl i always knew" ....can you believe it? and I get that they're not trying to be mean or anything, but they don't bother aknowledging what their friend if going through, or consider how they might feel. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how awesome that post is and i wish everyone could read it! Why can't everyone love and support each other, im a pansexual, i love everyone, so peoples close mindedness really confuses, sometime suprises, and always discusts me. Luv luv luv!

Posted:     Post subject: acceptance by cisgender women of me when dating

so far it has not happened

it did happen once for a few months in 1986 when I first transitioned but she backed out quickly. After that I was rejected and then put through reparative therapy by a church and then really messed up for awhile. Since then for the last 5 years no lesbian has accepted me into the dating pool!

`I can only agree with the TS girls here. I came out as lesbian (after my surgery) in 94 just in time to be invited to the 94 "lesbian Confest" in brisbane, a group calling themselves seperatists put up one heel of a stink about 3 of us being there, however the general consensus was we were women and my story was done in Brisbane gay mags "the woman beyond the man" as well as a story about the disruption "Violence mars confest". It was a long battle and I was publicly accepted in the lesbian (just to get up the separatists nose) and all seems good for us. Now 19yrs down the track transexual / transgender lesbians are still looked down on by lesbians and transgender support group (who only support straight trans here). Things haven't changed much I have got older but people haven't got wiser, its a sad world.
